We always hear about things to do before sex. There are so many do’s and don’t’s! But what about after? Does it even matter? Definitely! The deed might be done, but your responsibility is not. Doing certain things after sex will keep your body healthy. Sex is full of fun, love, and bacteria and lots of it. So keep these five habits in mind. You’ll be glad you did.
1. Always Remember To Urinate
Women should always urinate after sex. It’s the best way to prevent a urinary tract infection, or UTI. Symptoms include pain, pressure, and stinging while peeing. Your urine might also be cloudy, milky, or smelly.1 Whether or not you have sex, bacteria lives “down there.” However, during intercourse, bacteria gets pushed even further. It also poses the risk of harmful bacteria entering – and infecting – your body. Urinating after sex will flush out that bacteria. Even if you don’t need to go, give it a try. A few drops of pee is better than nothing.
2. Clean Your Entire Body
Sex can get sweaty and smelly. And while this is half the fun, it can ruin your skin. Take the time to wash your face. This will remove oil and bacteria build-up, the major cause of breakouts.3 It’s even more important if you didn’t take off your makeup beforehand. Wipe down your body. When sweat and bacteria collide, a bad odor will develop. It’s not very romantic.
3. Make Sure To Drink Water
Sex is a workout. In fact, according to the journal PLoS one, men burn about 101 kCal after sex. Women burn an average of 69.1 kCal. No wonder it’s so common to break out a sweat. Therefore, hydration is key. It’s not much different than other physical activity. By drinking water after sex, you can replace lost fluids from sweating. Better yet, this will make it easier to pee.
4. Change Your Underwear
It’s tempting to grab your underwear and pass out. Not so fast, though. Wearing the same pair can be bad news. After you’ve wiped down, slip into a clean pair. This will reduce exposure to bacterial buildup and moisture. If possible, wear cotton underwear to increase airflow and decrease moisture. It’ll limit odor, irritation, and infection risk. Don’t have a new pair on hand? Let your body breathe and go commando.
5. It Is Good To Eat Probiotics
Your vagina is full of bacteria. This is normal, natural, and healthy. But sex can throw it for a loop! Eating probiotics after sex can prevent imbalance. Don’t worry! You don’t need to sneak a cup of yogurt into bed. Instead, include probiotics in your next meal. Examples include yogurt, kimchi, kefir, and miso. You can also take a probiotic supplement later that day. By eating probiotics, you’ll keep the “good” bacteria in check. It’s the first line of defense against yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and other such issues.8
If you’re sexually active, keep these habits in mind. They might seem inconvenient at first. Yet, they can stop problems from cropping up. It’ll make sex enjoyable, safe, and fun, just like it should be.
